SYNERGY NORTH Enhances Regional Growth and Infrastructure with Advanced Digital Planning Tools
April 15, 2025
For Immediate Release
SYNERGY NORTH has unveiled two new interactive digital maps designed to assist developers and infrastructure planners in Thunder Bay and Kenora.
These tools offer valuable insights into the region’s electrical capacity and potential for generation, supporting smarter decision-making during the early stages of project development.
The Capacity Map provides a high-level overview of SYNERGY NORTH’s grid infrastructure, showcasing available electrical load capacity across various areas. Meanwhile, the Embedded Generation Map highlights potential locations for electricity generation within the communities.
This initiative reflects SYNERGY NORTH’s commitment to supporting growth and development in Thunder Bay and Kenora, providing key resources for those looking to invest in the region’s infrastructure.
“These maps will support and drive economic growth by highlighting areas of potential—empowering developers with the tools to identify sites with available electrical capacity for both construction and generation. With no restricted feeders, SYNERGY NORTH offers the capacity to both fuel expansion and foster sustainable development.” says Karla Bailey, Vice President, System Planning, Asset Management & Engineering
For contractors and developers, securing electrical capacity early in the planning process is critical. The tool serves as a preliminary resource, but SYNERGY NORTH emphasizes that it is not a substitute for a detailed engineering study. Neither map provides real-time data, cost estimates, or information on Distributed Energy Resource (DER) project location, fuel type, or size. Instead, they focus on power demand and load capacity, and generation capacity, guiding users toward submitting a formal service connection or generation request for more precise assessments and connection costs.
“Our communities are committed to growth, and we are supporting this vision by encouraging developers to leverage innovative tools that drive progress, streamline development, and unlock new opportunities for our community’s future.” continues Karla Bailey, Vice President, System Planning, Asset Management & Engineering
As net-zero goals and the adoption of EVs continue to accelerate, tools like the Capacity and Embedded Generation Maps will become increasingly valuable. They provide additional support during the critical first steps in the project development process—a move that helps SYNERGY NORTH adapt more efficiently to the evolving energy landscape.
