Board of Directors Opportunity

The City of Thunder Bay is currently seeking applications from individuals who wish to bring their business and board governance experience to a Director position on the Board of Directors of SYNERGY NORTH CORPORATION.

As a regulated electricity distribution company, the utility distributes electricity to over 56,000 residential and business customers in the Cities of Thunder Bay and Kenora, has assets in excess of $160 million, and employees over 140 staff.  The SYNERGY NORTH CORPORATION Board of Directors is comprised of eight Directors, whose appointments are generally for three year terms and expire on a staggered schedule.

At this time, the City of Thunder Bay is looking to appoint individuals to two Director positions, and will consider interested incumbent Directors as well as other qualified candidates.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will view this position as an opportunity to apply his or her demonstrated business and governance experience to contribute to the success of the business, and must be prepared to devote appropriate time and effort to his or her role on the Board.

The Board meets as often as required to provide effective governance and oversight. Currently, the Board is scheduled to meet five times per calendar year and each Director has additional Board Committee responsibilities.  It should be noted that the meetings of the Board generally take place in Thunder Bay. Travel expenses, should they be required, will be reimbursed.  The successful candidates will possess business and governance skills which complement and strengthen the abilities of the existing Directors.

Successful Candidates will demonstrate competence in the following skills based on an appropriate combination of knowledge and experience:

  • Financial Literacy
  • Risk Management
  • Strategic Planning
  • Corporate Governance
  • Senior Leadership
  • Electricity Sector

The completion of a recognized Director education/certification program as well as relevant Board of Directors experience would be considered an asset.  Applications are encouraged from qualified individuals who represent the diversity of SYNERGY NORTH’S customer base.
